SuperLeague
Founded in 1994 Black Fortress Barbarians first reached Serie A as part of the LFA's restructuring of the league in 1995. The formation of the
first SuperLeague in 1995 saw the Castleland club issued a Serie A license but BFB's debut season in the top flight was not to be one of success. The club
finished the 20 team division lying in lowly 18th place, 4 points from safety, and were relegated to Serie B along with Port Villa, Juventus
and Plasticland United.
One key to BFB's success was star forward González Blanco Raúl. The minifig's terrific performances for the Castlelanders had attracted the interest of footballing giants Legoland FC and ND Land FC. Although BFB did not wish to relinquish Raúl in the end the club agreed to sell the player to Legoland FC for £20m. A sweetener for both BFB and ND Land FC, who had lost out on the player, was that Raúl's staggering £8m annual wages would go on to dent the Blues' finances for the next decade. However, the loss of Raúl angered club owner King Noel so much he quit the club in a moment of madness (moment number 253). On the 5th May 2001 BFB were sold to long time sponsors, the Castle Clan newspaper group for £22m. BFB's new owners invested the funds received from the Raúl sale wisely and their biggest achievement was unquestionably the construction of a youth academy. The continual development of youth players has provided the club with a continual income over the years.
The following season BFB once again performed well finishing in third place behind Legoland FC and the reigning champions Legoland United, yet the team's recent successes were coming to an end. The 2000/1 season saw the club finish in 7th place and the following campaign saw the club fail to save themselves from the drop into Serie B. Finishing third from bottom in the 2001/2 season, again 4 points from safety, sealed their fate. After 6 seasons in the lower echelons of the league BFB secured promotion to Serie A in the 2007/8 season pipping Fiorentina and Napoli to top spot. Weeks later and the club's ownership changed hands when immigrant rights advocate, Claudia D'Impaciente, purchased the club for £60m on 20 June 2008. D'Impaciente became only the second ever female club president in Legoland football after Lazio's Mrs Sega, and had battled hard to retain the club's prestigious youth academy before sealing the bank financed deal.
