Greentown Athletic were established in 1995 and played their first competitive football in the 1995/6 Serie D. That season the club first tasted success by finishing in third place, behind Juve Stabia and Trainline Tigers, and gaining promotion to the third division. On the 23rd July 1996 the club merged with Imperia (est 1st June 1996) after considerable pressure from the LFA. Under the Summer League restructuring programme the League authorities desired that smaller sides would coalesce to enable newly developing non-professional teams to enter. The club opted for a new name, Greentown Imperia Athletic but decided to stay put at the Imperial Stadium.
The club only had to spend two seasons in Serie C1b before successful promotion to Serie B in 1998 when they finished in first place. In this period the club dropped Imperia from their name and reverted to being Greentown Athletic. In their first Serie B campaign the minnows finished just one point behind Inter Marino in second place and had reached the "Holy Grail" of Legoland football - Serie A, with back-to-back promotions. The club moved from the Imperial Stadium to the newly constructed Athletic Ground, a stadium that they could call their own. Despite halving the potential attendances the club have benefited from the unique atmosphere generated by the tight arena.
On 8th July 2008 the club was sold by the society's board president Fidelis Localus to Higginsland businessfig Primus Stove for £30m. Mr Stove who owned a rake of businesses including a Snooker Club, Sainsburys Supermarket, and the Evening Standard newspaper, was expected to pump money into the Greetownians and supporters of the club celebrated when the sale of the club was announced. It never happened and respect for Mr Stove nosedived. On the 21st April 2009 Mr Stove accepted an offer of £45m from Green Island billionaire and construction magnate Mr Alan McManus for ownership of the club. Concluding the deal was a drawn-out affair as McManus had first enquired about the sale of the club on the 6th of April before submitting a formal bid on the 7th after having been given the green light to make an offer. The two weeks between the bid being lodged and its acceptance was a nervous time for many fans of the Greentownians. Many supporters wished to see the back of Mr Stove as the Higginsland owner was accused of absenteeism and neglecting the much needed task of rejuvenating an aging playing staff.
