Cornered Giant Killers gun down Lego-Galacticos

news

Greentown are still staring into the abyss but the win allows the club to live another day. For LFC the loss did not prevent them from scooping the second gauranteed place in next season's Super 16 as both the chasing pack, BFB and Roma, suffered set-backs.

With their backs truly up against the wall, Greentown Athletic gave themselves a final life-line in their desperate Serie A battle for survival with a shock win this afternoon over a star-studded Legoland FC team at the Athletic Ground. The minnows, who are nicknamed the Giant Killers for the frequency at which they have beaten the two 2 Old Rule clubs over the years, did it again and now go into the final round of Serie A games next Saturday with an infinitesimal glimmer of hope.

Greentown's hope of avoiding the drop now rests on them picking up all three points away to Castleland United and Stuart Spacers coming unstuck when hosting Inter Police. Greentown's chances however are dashed by the fact that they need to make up a goal difference of seven; a 3-0 win over the Shields and a 4-0 win for the Pigs would do the trick but this does seem a high order to ask.

Elsewhere, the Serie A status of six other clubs remains in the balance with Fiorentina, Inter Police, Napoli, Stuart Spacers, Atlas Bell and Third Division UASL all facing a nerve racking 90 minutes next weekend. Favourites for the drop are Greentown, Atlas and Napoli. Napoli's prospects nosedived today when coach Edoardo Reja requested his P45 after today's loss to Legoland United. In a parting shot at club owner Colonel Brik, Reja did not mince his words. "Brik is a deluded minifig and is determined to stick with a bunch of loser players. They have no hope under his leadership as he fails to see they are useless."

At the top of the table, Legoland United's 4-1 win over Napoli sees them reach 99 points and open a record 22 point gap between themselves and second placed Legoland FC. The battle to secure the Super 16 Conference guaranteed spot is effectively over as LFC's vastly superior goal difference means BFB have no realistic chance. Nevertheless, with Roma breathing down their neck, BFB will need to win away to Ajax Skerries or hope Lazio stall Roma to ensure third place is theirs.
